Liposuction Procedure and Cost
Precision Body Contouring. Lasting Confidence.
What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction, also referred to as lipoplasty or body contouring, is a surgical procedure that uses a controlled suction technique to remove localised deposits of fat from specific areas of the body. It is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedures worldwide and is available both as a standalone aesthetic treatment and as part of broader medical management for certain conditions. Liposuction does not replace a healthy lifestyle and is not a weight loss solution. It is designed to reshape and refine body contours in areas where stubborn fat resists diet and exercise.
| Estimated Cost (India) | $4,000 to $4,500 |
| Hospital Stay | Approximately 2 days |
| Recovery Stay in India | 4 days after discharge |
| Procedure Success Rate | 72% to 90% |
| Procedure Type | Minimally invasive fat removal surgery |
| Anaesthesia | Local or general, based on clinical assessment |
| Typical Duration of Surgery | 1 to 2 hours |
| Results Visible | Approximately 1 month post-procedure |
Medical Conditions Treated with Liposuction
Beyond cosmetic applications, liposuction is used in the treatment of several medically recognised conditions:
Lipedema
A chronic condition that predominantly affects women, characterised by a disproportionate accumulation of fat beneath the skin, most commonly in the legs and lower body. Liposuction can significantly reduce discomfort and improve mobility in affected patients.
Lymphedema
A condition arising from a compromised lymphatic system, resulting in localised fat and fluid build-up. Liposuction may be recommended to reduce swelling and improve quality of life.
Lipomas
Benign, non-cancerous growths of fatty tissue that develop beneath the skin. Liposuction offers a minimally invasive option for their removal.
Gynaecomastia
The development of excess fatty and glandular tissue in the male chest. Liposuction can be used to address this condition and restore a flatter chest contour.
Breast Reduction
Liposuction is sometimes used in conjunction with or as an alternative to traditional breast reduction surgery to remove excess fatty tissue and reduce breast volume.
Treatment Areas
Liposuction can be applied to a wide range of body areas, including but not limited to:
- Abdomen and waistline
- Hips and buttocks
- Thighs (inner and outer)
- Upper arms
- Back and flanks
- Inner knee
- Calves and ankles
Your treating surgeon will assess your anatomy, skin quality, and treatment goals to determine the most appropriate areas for intervention.
Ideal Candidates for Liposuction
Liposuction delivers the best outcomes for individuals who meet specific clinical criteria. It is not a substitute for weight loss or a treatment for obesity.
Suitable Candidates
- Adults who are close to their target body weight with specific localised fat deposits
- Individuals with good skin elasticity and muscle tone, which supports optimal contouring results
- Non-smokers, or those willing to cease smoking well in advance of and following the procedure
- People in good overall health with no underlying conditions that could increase surgical risk
Liposuction Is Not Recommended For
- Individuals seeking significant overall weight loss
- Patients with uncontrolled diabetes
- Those with significant cardiovascular disease
- Individuals with a compromised immune system
A thorough pre-operative consultation with your GHO-partnered specialist will confirm whether you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.
Pre-Operative Assessment
Before proceeding with liposuction, your surgeon will require a set of baseline investigations to assess your overall health and surgical readiness. These typically include:
- Complete Blood Count (CBC)
- Comprehensive physical examination
- Urine cotinine test (to confirm non-smoking status)
- Electrolyte assessment
- Clotting analysis (coagulation screen)
Additional investigations may be requested based on your medical history and the specific areas to be treated.
Liposuction Techniques
Several proven techniques are available for liposuction. Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate method based on the treatment area, volume of fat to be removed, and your individual anatomy.
| Tumescent Liposuction | A saline solution combined with local anaesthesia is infused into the target area before suctioning. This is the most widely used technique and significantly reduces the risk of bleeding and post-operative trauma. |
| Dry Liposuction | The traditional approach, performed without pre-infusion of fluid. While still used in some settings, it carries a comparatively higher risk of bleeding and bruising. |
| Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction | Ultrasound energy is delivered through the cannula to liquefy fat cells before removal. This facilitates smoother extraction and is particularly effective in fibrous areas of the body. |
| Power-Assisted Liposuction | A mechanised cannula vibrates rapidly to break up fatty tissue, enabling more precise and efficient removal with reduced physical effort from the surgeon. |
| Laser-Assisted Liposuction | Laser energy is transmitted through the cannula to melt fat prior to suctioning. This is the least invasive of all techniques and is associated with skin tightening benefits in addition to fat removal. |
The Surgical Procedure
Liposuction is performed as a day procedure or with an overnight stay, depending on the extent of treatment and the type of anaesthesia administered.
Step 1: Anaesthesia
The surgeon administers either local anaesthesia, which numbs only the target area while the patient remains awake, or general anaesthesia, delivered intravenously, which renders the patient fully unconscious. The choice of anaesthesia is determined based on clinical factors and patient preference.
Step 2: Incisions
Small, discreet incisions are made in the skin adjacent to the treatment area. A local anaesthetic solution is then infused into the targeted tissue to minimise bleeding and facilitate smooth fat removal.
Step 3: Fat Removal
A thin, hollow tube called a cannula is inserted through the incisions. The surgeon moves the cannula in a controlled, deliberate manner to loosen the fat cells. The dislodged fat is then drawn out through the cannula using a surgical vacuum or syringe.
Step 4: Closure
Once the desired contouring has been achieved, the incisions are closed and dressed with bandages or compression garments. The treated areas are carefully monitored before the patient is moved to recovery.
Recovery and Post-Operative Care
Recovery from liposuction varies depending on the number of areas treated and the type of anaesthesia used. Patients who receive local anaesthesia are generally discharged the same day. Those who receive general anaesthesia may require an overnight stay.
What to Expect After Surgery
- Bandages or compression garments around the treated areas to reduce swelling and support healing
- Prescription antibiotics and pain relief medication to minimise infection risk and manage discomfort
- Numbness in the treated areas, which may persist for up to four weeks and typically resolves without intervention
- Swelling, bruising, and mild to moderate discomfort in the days following the procedure
Recovery Timeline
- Days 1 to 3: Rest at home, light movement encouraged to reduce clot risk
- Week 1 to 2: Gradual reduction in swelling and bruising, return to light daily activity
- Week 3 to 4: Most visible swelling resolves, compression garments may still be worn
- Month 1 onwards: Final contouring results become visible as residual swelling clears completely
Light physical activity is encouraged during recovery to support circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided until cleared by your surgeon.
Understanding the Risks
As with any surgical procedure, liposuction carries a degree of risk. GHO partners exclusively with accredited hospitals and board-certified surgeons who follow international patient safety protocols to minimise these risks.
| Infection | Surgical instruments may occasionally introduce bacteria into the skin. Signs include discharge or oozing at the incision site. Medical attention should be sought immediately if this occurs |
| Blood Clots | Prolonged inactivity following surgery can increase the risk of clot formation. Clots may migrate to the lungs, causing serious complications. Light movement during recovery is strongly encouraged |
| Kidney Function Changes | Fluids administered during the procedure can alter the body's fluid balance, which may place strain on kidney function in some patients. |
| Cardiac Effects | The same fluid shifts that affect kidney function may also have implications for cardiac health, particularly in patients with pre-existing heart conditions |
| Pulmonary Oedema | In rare cases, excess fluid may accumulate in the lungs, resulting in pulmonary oedema. This is closely monitored by the surgical team during and after the procedure. |
Your surgeon will discuss all potential risks in detail during your pre-operative consultation. Patients are encouraged to ask questions and raise any concerns before proceeding with treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will liposuction help me lose weight?
No. Liposuction is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss treatment. It targets localised fat deposits in specific areas and does not reduce overall body weight. A registered dietitian or bariatric specialist is better placed to advise on weight management
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure typically takes between one and two hours, depending on the number of areas being treated
Is liposuction painful?
Most patients experience mild discomfort rather than significant pain. The procedure is performed under anaesthesia and is generally well tolerated. Post-operative soreness is managed with prescribed pain relief
When will results become visible?
Initial results are often noticeable within a few weeks, with final contouring outcomes typically visible around one month after the procedure
How long do the results last?
The results of liposuction are long-lasting, provided the patient maintains a stable weight through a balanced diet and active lifestyle. Fat cells removed during the procedure do not regenerate.
Can liposuction be performed more than once?
Yes. A second procedure can be performed on the same area if clinically appropriate, subject to specialist assessment.
Who performs this surgery?
Liposuction is performed by a board-certified cosmetic or plastic surgeon with specialised training in body contouring techniques.
Which technique is considered most effective?
The most suitable technique depends on the individual's anatomy, the treatment area, and the volume of fat to be removed. Laser-assisted liposuction is widely regarded as the least invasive option and may provide additional skin-tightening benefits.
